If information were a product, if readers paid for that product and if journalists acted as a normal workforce, maybe this could all be explained by a trite tale of the internet’s power and the declining relevance of printed newspapers. But it can't.

"Adventure! That's what we like every once in a while. Life is boring without it." -My grandfather this Thanksgiving
New York is, by most indicators, a terrible city: It has crumbling roads, government corruption, unreliable transit, housing shortages, voter disenfranchisement... Take anything a functional city is supposed to do for its people and New York objectively does not do it well. Despite this, the city indisputably manages to be a powerhouse of cultural influence and financial capital. Millions of people, individually determined to prevail, make it powerful despite overwhelming opposition to progress every step of the way—how American of us. I'm going to miss it. . "You see I was in a curious position in New York: it never occurred to me that I was living a real life there. In my imagination I was only there for just another few months. ... I am not sure that it is possible for anyone brought up in the East to appreciate entirely what New York, the idea of New York, means to those of us who came out of the West and the South. ... To think of 'living' there was to reduce the miraculous to the mundane." -Joan Didion
